This Supreme Court Gun Case Isn’t Getting Enough Attention
Who gets to make the decision?
Photographer: Sean Rayford/Getty Images North AmericaGun control cases rarely lead the news these days, perhaps because the Supreme Court strikes most regulations down. But even though I, like most observers, expect the Hawaii statute on which the justices heard oral argument this week to suffer the same fate, it’s worth taking a moment to understand what’s at stake.
Unlike many Second Amendment cases, Wolford v. Lopez isn’t about who can own a firearm, who needs a permit, or who gets to keep the weapon concealed. It’s about when one can carry a legal weapon on private property that’s open to the public — a shopping mall, for instance, or a privately owned park.
