See the Prizewinning Images From the 2017 World Press Photo Contest

You'll immediately recognize some of these pictures, which have taken their place in history as the defining images of social movements or significant moments. Others stand out for their visual creativity and skill.

The winners of the 60th World Press Photo Contest, run by a Dutch non-profit foundation, were chosen from more than 80,000 images submitted by more than 5,000 photographers from around the world. Photo of the Year was awarded to Turkish Associated Press photographer Burhan Ozbilici for his image capturing the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, in December. Here is a selection of the winning images.
