Iranian and US officials were in Muscat, Oman, today for their first negotiations since a 12-day conflict last June, part of efforts to avert renewed hostilities. US President Donald Trump, who launched a surprise attack on Iran last year, has threatened the Middle Eastern country again, moving US naval forces nearby.

Iranian officials have insisted the indirect talks should be limited to the subject of its nuclear program, while US officials said Iran’s missiles and support for regional militias must be included. Originally, Trump had pinned his renewed threats against Iran to popular uprisings there in which thousands of demonstrators have been killed.
