Australia Scraps Much of Inland Rail Project to Save Budget Cash
Australia has canceled much of an inland freight rail project to save money for the upcoming budget, with the center-left government pledging to be “really responsible” in its fiscal program.
The train project was announced about a decade ago and initially conceived to be a 1,600-kilometer (1,000-mile) line connecting the state capitals of Melbourne and Brisbane via an inland route. But since then the cost of the project has blown out.
