Leipzig Car Attacker Was German With History of Mental Illness

Photographer: Jens Schlueter/AFP/Getty ImagesThe man who killed two people when he drove into a crowd in Leipzig, eastern Germany, late Monday was a local who had reportedly been undergoing psychiatric treatment and police said the attack did not appear to be politically motivated.
The driver, a 33-year-old German national from the Leipzig region, was detained shortly after the incident and is being held in custody, police added in a statement. Public broadcaster MDR reported that the attacker had recently been released from psychiatric hospital.
