Hong Kong’s Beloved Bakehouse Surprises With Its Foray Into Dinner

The standout item was neither pastry nor a main dish.

In Hong Kong, land of the egg tart, Bakehouse stands out for its flaky, sourdough version — so popular that its signature blue takeaway bag is a must-have for residents and visitors alike. While its original location has long been a favorite brunch spot, the restaurant added dinner service in November with an ambitious menu that forays far beyond pastries.

The Wan Chai restaurant is Bakehouse’s second to offer a dinner menu, the first being its Sha Tin outpost. Intrigued, I went recently for an early weeknight dinner to see if the main dishes can hold their own against Bakehouse’s desserts. My guest and I opted for the HK$680 ($87) set for two, which included two appetizers, two main courses, a side and a dessert for sharing. After various add-ons, two glasses of wine (HK$50 apiece) and service, our check came to HK$999. Given the difference between the total bill and advertised set, I admit I suffered a bit of sticker shock, but ultimately did find the additional costs acceptable when accounting for the portions, quality and service.
