Colombia’s surprise decision to halt interest rate increases this week was intended to prevent upheaval, but may come at a cost, according to central bank co-director Mauricio Villamizar.

The bank unexpectedly left its key rate unchanged at 11.25% on Thursday in a unanimous decision after intense pressure from the government not to further raise borrowing costs.
