The head of Taiwan’s main opposition party said she has asked to meet with President Donald Trump on a planned trip to the US, casting herself as a leader who could prevent a conflict with China through dialogue with the world’s largest economies.

Kuomintang Chairperson Cheng Li-wun confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday that she made the request to speak with the American president, although she said it “could be very difficult” to make happen.
