Nations that fail to report coal mine methane emissions could be missing out on cheap opportunities to slash releases of the potent greenhouse gas, according to a report from energy think tank Ember.

Just 23 of 73 coal-producing nations reported coal mine methane emissions for 2023, according to Ember’s analysis of the most recent country submissions to the United Nations. That accounted for 11% of the 35 million metric tons of the gas that the think tank estimated was generated by the sector in 2023.
