Italy needs to watch its spending if it wants to stick to European Union fiscal rules despite a worsening economic growth scenario, Bank of Italy official Andrea Brandolini said.

“It will be crucial to closely monitor spending trends, bearing in mind that higher-than-expected inflation would make it even more difficult to adhere to the planned consolidation path,” Brandolini, who leads the central bank’s economics and statistics department, told lawmakers in Rome on Tuesday.
