Keir Starmer faces a possible investigation into whether he misled Parliament, setting up a high-stakes loyalty test with the British prime minister’s party just days before crucial local elections.

On Monday Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons, green-lit a parliamentary debate on whether Starmer should be referred to the Privileges Committee over his appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US. If the vote is successful, the panel would be asked to assess whether he misled members of Parliament over his handling of the controversial appointment.
