Germany Sounded Out Possible Commerzbank White Knights This Year

Germany sounded out European lenders to defend Commerzbank AG against UniCredit SpA’s takeover bid earlier this year, according to people familiar with the matter.

German officials informally approached the banks as they explored the feasibility of a new strategic investor acquiring a stake or even taking over the Frankfurt-based bank, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing the matter. The talks didn’t go beyond a highly preliminary stage.
