Richer European Countries Question Multi-Trillion Budget Talks

Tensions over the European Union’s next long-term budget surfaced in negotiations among member states, with the bloc’s richer members insisting that their contributions to the common budget be reduced.

EU leaders at a summit in Cyprus on Friday held their first substantive discussion about the bloc’s €1.8 trillion ($2.1 trillion) budget which runs from 2028 to 2034, amid deep divisions over how the money should be raised and allocated.
