European Union leaders tasked the bloc’s finance ministers to come up with new measures to deal with the continent’s energy crunch after assessing that current proposals don’t go far enough, according to a person familiar with the conversations.

During a meeting of EU leaders Thursday night in Cyprus, there was a signal that the plan put forward by the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, earlier this week fell short, said the person who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
