Chicago Splits 2026 Advance Pension Payment on Cash Crunch

Chicago is dividing up its annual advance supplemental payment to its underfunded pensions into two, a departure from paying the entire amount at the start of the year.

The third-largest US city is paying the first half — about $130 million — on Friday and the balance later this year, according to a statement from a spokesperson for Mayor Brandon Johnson.
