One of the unexpected winners of the upheaval in college sports is fencing.
Due to the rising cost of athletics programs, including paying student athletes after a landmark legal settlement this year, fielding a fencing team has become increasingly appealing. The sport has lower expenses than its more popular rivals, and many of the athletes come from high-income families and pay full tuition, so the school doesn’t have to provide financial aid.
