How Mass Anti-Graft Protests Pushed Bulgaria Into a Political Crisis

Bulgaria is in political turmoil after the largest anti-corruption demonstrations in decades triggered the resignation of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov’s minority government just weeks before the country is due to adopt the euro currency.

Zhelyazkov stepped down under mounting pressure as tens of thousands of people filled the streets of the capital Sofia and other major cities, rallying against what they perceive as entrenched corruption and cronyism.
