Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s popularity plunged to all-time lows largely due to economic challenges that are plaguing leaders around the world rather than his own policy missteps, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said in an interview.
Accelerating inflation and slowing growth have weighed on Lula, sapping the confidence of investors and ordinary Brazilians in recent months. But similar problems had roiled financial markets and upended global politics even before Donald Trump’s return to power stoked international economic uncertainty, and Lula’s government intends to stay its course instead of reacting with alarm, according to the finance chief.
