Jacques Delors, a working-class Frenchman who rose to Europe’s highest office and was the driving force behind the European single market and euro, has died. He was 98.

He died in his sleep at his Paris home on Wednesday, Agence France-Presse reported, citing his daughter, Martine Aubry. The Jacques Delors Institute in Paris, a think tank founded by Delors in 1996, confirmed his death.
