Switzerland shut the Gotthard road tunnel on Sunday evening after pieces of concrete fell from the ceiling, in the latest disruption to key transalpine freight routes.
Travel and trade have been repeatedly hindered over the summer by a raft of accidents at tunnels in Switzerland, France and Italy, highlighting the importance of these links to the more than 200 million tons of goods that cross the Alps every year.
