Italy’s struggle with population decline was more desperate than ever in 2022 and will continue to worsen in the future, with births at their lowest level since records began.

The number of births declined for the fourteenth consecutive year to 393,000 and will probably be worse in 2023, according to the annual report released by Istat. Italy’s fertility rate was 1.24 in 2022, with only Malta and Spain lower in the EU.
