Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Asia Pacific nations to avoid a return to tensions that could divide the region as they did during the Cold War, in what appeared to be a reference to U.S. efforts to rally allies on issues from Taiwan to trade.
“There’s no future for parties to draw ideological lines or create small geopolitical circles,” Xi said early Thursday in a translation of video remarks to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit, hosted by New Zealand. “The Asia Pacific region can’t and also shouldn’t return to Cold War-era tensions and isolation.”
