The U.K.’s bonds are just a few basis points away from yielding less than Japan’s, known for their ultra-low rates.

The spread between the nations’ five-year bonds has shrunk to about six basis points this week, a record based on closing data. The gaps between the countries’ two- and 30-year bonds aren’t far off.
