Stocks can rise and fall on the recommendations of sell-side analysts, who label (and relabel) shares with terms like “buy,” “hold,” or “sell.” A look at analysts’ upgrades and downgrades from 1993 to 2011 shows they have a greater probability of influencing a stock when market conditions are bad, according to a new study.
